The Karnataka government has announced a public holiday on Tuesday after the death of Siddhaganga Mutt's seer Sivakumar Swamy.
All educational institutions, including schools and colleges, government offices, banks and insurance companies across the state, will not work on Tuesday. Vacation has been declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Three-day state mourning has also been declared, where national and state flag will be on half mast.
The 111-year-old watcher took the last breath at the monastery at 11:44 in the monastery on Monday. The seer, popularly known as 'Er Nadeedudev Devaru' (Walking God), was also the head of the Siddaganga Education Society, which runs from around 125 academic institutions in the state - from engineering colleges to business schools. Many institutes offer free education and boarding facilities to poor students.
The revered seer was not only a religion chief of the Lingayat community but also a national award winner. He was honored with Padma Bhushan in 2015 for his extensive social work. He had also received an honorary doctorate degree in 2007 from Karnataka University and Karnataka Ratna Award. He died after a long illness. He was suffering from lung infection. Shivkumar Swami died at 11.44 in the morning, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has announced a three-day state mourning. His funeral will be done tomorrow with full state honors. All schools and colleges in the state will be closed tomorrow. More updates soon
