New Delhi: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday said that his vehicle was shot at near Chhajrasi toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh when he was returning to Delhi from an election program in Meerut.
He has demanded an independent inquiry into the incident and said that he will write to the Election Commission.
Lok said, "I request the Election Commission to order an independent inquiry into this firing incident. It is the responsibility of the UP government and the Modi government to conduct an independent investigation. I will also meet the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in this matter." MP after reaching Delhi.
One person arrested, another in custody
Less than two hours after the incident, the Superintendent of Police (Hapur) said one person had been arrested. "He is being questioned, and a weapon has been recovered from him. His accomplice managed to escape, search operation is on for him. And we will update you once the facts come to light. No one was injured so far." We are checking the CCTV footage."
Meerut IG Range Praveen Kumar confirmed the arrest and said that the shooting site has been inspected and the investigation will be "taken to its logical end". A few hours later another person was taken into custody.
UP Police officials said that the interrogation of the attackers (one arrested, the other taken into custody) is going on. The accused reportedly told the police that they took this action after being hurt by Owaisi's anti-Hindu statements.
Recalling the incident that took place around 6 pm, Owaisi said, "I was on my way to Delhi after an election program in Kithore, Meerut (UP). Two people attacked my vehicle near Chhajrasi toll plaza by 3-4 people. Firing rounds; there were 3-4 people in total. My car's tires got punctured, I left in another vehicle."
